We’re so excited to welcome Liberia as Village Reach’s newest mission location! Our dreamer, Melvin, is already leading the way, and we can’t wait to walk alongside him and his community as we partner to put dreams within reach.

To help you get to know this incredible country, here are 10 amazing facts about Liberia:

1. Founded by Freed African Americans

In the early 19th century, freed African Americans and formerly enslaved people established Liberia. This unique history creates a deep connection between Liberia and the United States, while also blending with the deep traditions of Liberia’s 16 indigenous ethnic groups.

2. English is the Primary Official Language

Liberia is one of the few African nations where English is the official language. This makes communication easier across its diverse ethnic groups and connects its people with partners around the world. But most Liberians also speak one or more of the country’s 20+ indigenous languages, such as Kpelle, Bassa, Grebo, or Vai (which even has its own script!). This rich linguistic diversity keeps culture alive across generations.

3. Population: ~5.3 Million

With around 5.3 million people, Liberia is smaller than many countries, but its communities are diverse, resilient, and growing. Each ethnic group contributes unique cultural traditions, from weaving and wood carving to festivals and storytelling.

4. Christianity is Central

Over 85% of Liberians identify as Christian, and faith deeply shapes community life. Churches are not only places of worship but also centers for education, social gatherings, and hope in times of hardship.

5. National Symbols of Peace

Liberia’s flag resembles the U.S. flag, with red and white stripes and a single star representing unity. The dove, another national symbol, reflects the country’s enduring desire for peace after years of civil conflict.

6. Natural Beauty

From golden beaches along the Atlantic coast to lush rivers and mountains, Liberia’s landscapes are breathtaking — and communities thrive when supported by sustainable local leadership.

7. Lush Rainforests & Biodiversity

Liberia’s forests are among the oldest in Africa. They are home to chimpanzees, forest elephants, pygmy hippos, and countless plant species, making it a biodiversity hotspot.

8. Education Challenges

While literacy rates are improving, access to quality education is still limited — especially in rural areas. Many families live in poverty and teachers are scarce. This is an area where local dreamers, supported by Village Reach, are eager to make a difference.

9. Addressing Poverty

About half of Liberians live below the international poverty line. Many face challenges like hunger, lack of clean water, and disrupted education. Yet, communities are resourceful — relying on each other to make ends meet. Our partnership with a local Dreamer aims to empower communities and improve livelihoods.

10. Dreams in Action

Dreamers like Melvin are turning vision into reality. With Village Reach’s support, local leaders are tackling challenges in poverty, education, and community development, creating lasting change.
